The United Artists Theatre is a classic, Golden Era Hollywood location. In 1927, it was the headquarters of United Artist Studios, the independent film studio created by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and DW Griffith. Classic Hollywood! They established one of the first production houses outside of the Hollywood studio system - giving artists more creative freedom over craft and story. Pioneers of the time, United Artists vision changed the landscape of filmmaking.
When I'm at United Artists, I feel the magic of Hollywood. Charlie Chaplin's films premiered here. Einstein was a guest! As the first United Theater, it's grandiose, ornate, and absolutely gorgeous. Immaculate details from floor to ceiling. This movie palace feels special to be inside. This strip of Broadway in Downtown LA is a part of LA's Golden Era Theatre District (modeled after Broadway in Manhattan). For movies! This rich street was once lined with movie palaces from the Golden Era - now turned into Apple Stores. The last time I drove past the United Artists Theatre I happened to see a STARZ red carpet premiere.
Today, you can still catch a film premiere or performance here! The United Artist Theatre (and 13 floor building attached) now belong to the Ace Hotel and it's a cool vibe. I like to hang out here. Whether it's for a film screening or a walk downtown, the 1,600 seat United Theatre/Ace Hotel is a must-see landmark of Hollywood history. I highly recommend it!
