Conscious gourmet vegan dining is undeniably a concept native to California and Café Gratitude sits on the throne as potentate of organic, sustainable, local and seasonal dining. The philosophy behind this perfectly marketed food shrine is one of gratitude for each other and ourselves. It endorses a Ram Dass school of thought, targeting a first world Western minority to acknowledge and appreciate what they have.
Mini mantras pepper the menu with punchy, ‘I’-centric affirmations cleverly marked as the names of the dishes, which are then declared to the universe when announcing to the server what it is that (Capital) ‘I’ want. The reticent Britishness in me, finds it slightly spurious when the server asks profound questions to ponder before ordering.
All the dishes are filling without experiencing the dreaded post refined-carb bloat. I usually order the, I AM WHOLE, a delicious macrobiotic mélange of green leafy vegetables, house made kimchee, quinoa, sea vegetables and a tahini sauce. I usually follow this with the, I AM IMMORTAL, an immune system enhancing, ancient warm elixir tea made from Reishi, Shilajit and Ormus mushrooms, blended with coconut milk and raw honey. This earthy tea is reminiscent of some kind of a paleolithic potion. The desserts deserve a saliva curdling mention, by delivering a sweet hit without spiking blood sugar levels.
