Los Angeles is hardly lacking in craft breweries – there are over 60 at last count. However, I think the Stalking Horse is something pretty special.
First, their beer is great, which is always a fine quality in a brewery. (My favorite is the ‘Happy Hour’ but every brew I’ve had was tasty!) They’ve got some killer cocktails too, if that’s more your preference.
Second, they have great food. My personal favorite is the Cottage Pie. (Some people call it Shepherds Pie but that, technically, is made with lamb; Cottage Pie is basically the same thing made with beef.) However, the Stalking Horse version is vegan, made with Impossible burger rather than meat. Now, I’m not vegan and I lived in the north of Britain for several years so I think I know a good pie – and this is the very best Cottage Pie I’ve ever had, with meat or not. It comes in a cast iron skillet and the mashed potatoes on top are browned and crispy. YUM!
They do, of course, have other food as well. The burgers are yummy, their fish is fried to a beautiful crispness (whether you get it with chips or in a sandwich), and their tater tots are AMAZING.
Overall, it’s just a nice place to hang out – the waitstaff is friendly and the garden area is perfect for a summer evening. Or even a winter’s evening – this is LA, you know!
Great food, great beer, friendly staff, nice atmosphere – what’s not to love?
