I started doing stand-up comedy at Tao Comedy Studio. This hidden gem in Koreatown is a school, an open mic/show studio, and home of the Riot Grrrl Comedy Festival. It’s a great place to develop your bits and watch talented comedians perform. You can hit an open mic 4/7 days of the week, do private lessons, or take an 8-week course with a graduation show @ Flapper’s Comedy Club Burbank, and learn from the best.
The Tao School of Comedy is led by veteran comedian Bobbie Oliver. Bobbie has performed over 25 years with features on network TV and is the author of The Tao of Comedy: Embrace the Pause.
Bobbie Oliver teaches a unique and inspiring approach to stand-up comedy: Embrace the Pause. She explains that all the best observations, jokes, and performances come from our inner stillness. We breathe and meditate. Then, create. By embracing the Tao, we create what we’re intended to create.
I found Tao to be the best place to start in stand-up comedy. It’s cool, calm, and still. I find this method especially helpful in writing jokes and conquering the fears of performing. I embrace the Tao to create, appreciate, shine light on the darkness, and create opportunities to laugh.
Next time you’re in LA, come to an Open Mic or Saturday Show @ Tao Comedy Studio. Take a private lesson or 8-week workshop with the veteran Bobbie Oliver herself!
