When you have been living in a city many years I guess it’s a bit like a marriage and you can get stuck in a rut, visiting the same places where you know what to expect. You still like it, love it even, but it can feel as though the thrill has gone. So discovering fresh places to haunt is the sexy underwear of city living.
Madrid and l celebrated our Silver Anniversary a few years ago- we’ve split up a few times; had a few trial separations, but I always come back because this is a city that always has something new up its sleeve.
Amazing Chinese restaurants arriving here was a game-changer food-wise, and my recent forays into the neighbourhood of Usera to Madrid’s Chinatown, seeking ever more authentic Chinese eats, is putting life back into this old marriage of mine.
The newly renamed Chuan La Xiang Du is one of the best I’ve found so far, with a menu full of delicious, well-priced choices. I like the spicy cucumber salad, and the Chinese aubergines are wonderful. The whole fish with ginger, chillis and scallions is spectacular. Dishes are Szechuan style, which means hot – these guys aren’t playing when it comes to chilli; you’ve been warned! Friendly and accommodating service too – they even vegetarian-ized a dish for me. Make a beeline for this place spice lovers, before it goes mainstream.
