I love to try anything new – food, places, sensations… This is not always a good thing (kids: don’t try this at home.) It’s me – I just can’t help myself. I feel comfortable outside my comfort zone.
But even so… When you have been living in a city many years I guess it’s a bit like a marriage and you can get stuck in a rut, visiting the same places where you know what to expect. You still like it, love it even, but it can feel as though the thrill has gone. So discovering fresh places to haunt is the sexy underwear of city living.
Madrid and I will be celebrating our Silver Anniversary next year – we’ve split up a few times; had a few trial separations, but I always come back because this is a city that always has something new up its sleeve.
Amazing Chinese restaurants arriving here was a game changer food-wise, and my recent forays into the neighbourhood of Usera to Madrid’s China town, seeking ever more authentic Chinese eats, is putting life back into this old marriage of mine.
Sabor Sichuan is the best I’ve found so far – it’s crazy good, and cheap as chips as we say back in old Blighty. Spice lovers should make a beeline for this place before it goes mainstream – the spicy cucumber salad and the Chinese aubergines are wonderful. Friendly and accommodating service too – they vegetarian-ized a dish for me. Take your own wine and try the whole fish!
