Empire Exchange – Cluttered cave of treasures

I’m sure there aren’t many places in the world where you’ll find a signed photograph of Deirdre Barlow from Coronation Street displayed proudly next to a May 1983 edition of the NME, but Empire Exchange is one of them.

This junk shop-cum-emporium is one of the weirdest, but most exciting, places in Manchester. It’s a treasure trove of weird and wonderful items, including heaps of old vinyl, vintage magazines, clothing, signage, toys, pottery, glassware and everything in-between.

The interior is enough to give Marie Kondo, author of The Japanese Art of Decluttering, a heart attack. Be prepared to roll your sleeves up and get diggin’. Don’t come here looking for something specific, either – come with an open mind and a love of other peoples’ junk. Just don’t blame me if you leave with a bag full of stuff you don’t need…
