In the centre of town (just off St Peter’s Square) is the excellent Lawn Coffee, It’s a bit of a secret because it’s not very visible from the street, but walk into the lobby of the Princess St. Hotel and turn left and you will find yourself in Lawn Coffee, a beautiful, comfortably appointed oasis of tranquillity. It really is the place to go for an expertly made cup of coffee, a proper pot of tea or an artisan hot chocolate experience. You might even see me there, reading the paper in my favourite corner by the big curved window: if you do, please say hello.
Connoisseurs will certainly appreciate what is on offer: Manchester’s renowned Ancoats Coffee roasts the beans and you can choose your method – espresso, Aeropress or V60; loose-leaf teas and infusions, sourced by Manchester’s Boheatease, are made by pouring water over each variety at carefully pre-defined temperatures so as not to impair the flavours; the chocolate is Peruvian and Venezuelan and…well, you get my drift. What I’m talking about here is superb drinks, served in first-class surroundings by knowledgeable staff.
And in case you are wondering about the name, it is inspired by Manchester’s Cottonopolis legacy: lawn is a type of cotton material and it was in this former warehouse that it was stored and sold. So, don’t queue with the crowds at Caffè Nero for a burnt espresso: spoil yourself at Lawn Coffee, where the quality is superior but the cost is the same!
