There are many places where the coffee is excellent but the decor is grungy, or the service is amateur, or the seating is uncomfortable. However, there is now a place in town that is the nemesis of all such dives. Porter and Cole (named after the owner’s dogs) inhabits a large, airy space, exquisitely furnished and imbued with an air of luxury – and the coffee is the same price as it is in the grungy places! Go here if you appreciate comfort, professional service and good coffee – and wine, and food, and even lifestyle goods. It feels like being at home – but with staff to cater for your needs – and its mix of big tables and comfortable seats makes it a perfect hangout for gigging home-workers and office dudes who want an off-site meeting.
When I tire of wooden benches and dirty table-tops, this is the place to revive my spirits and make me feel civilised. I would like to spend more time sampling the lamb tagine, drinking the reasonably priced bottles of wine and browsing the shelves with a view to buying a chic table-lamp but time, the ultimate luxury, presses so I rarely get more than an hour to linger in this stylish lifestyle lounge. Whoever said less is more, ought to visit here and reconsider that aphorism.
