One Tuesday, I was sitting around in my pyjamas considering getting out of bed when my friend phones me, “are you free for lunch?” she asks, her boyfriend has broken his tooth so can’t go. I quickly get dressed, and, after Googling the place, put makeup on.
Restaurant MCR perfectly encapsulates Manchester’s industrial history while remaining elegant and (just a tad) intimidating. We arrive and are seated with welcome cocktails — this is already going great!
We’re both vegetarian so are having the vegetarian 6-course tasting menu, I’m a bit worried since I’m a fussy eater, and while usually, I’d just dump what I didn’t like on someone else’s plate, you can’t really do that somewhere where the head chef has a Michelin star.
But I ate (almost, no mushrooms for me) all of it! And a big part of that was the interesting and inventive ways the food was served. We’re talking flowers made into a sorbet, fennel and pickled onion mousse and things I didn’t even understand! And it was all genuinely delicious, I’d never eaten food like it and probably won’t again any time soon.
Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, explaining, in detail, everything on our plates, making sure we were comfortable and happy and not in want of anything.
The price is a bit steep but makes sense and for a special occasion, it’s definitely worth it.
Also, the toilets were very fancy.
Note – Book ahead to avoid disappointment!
