The Kings Arms is deceptive from the outside – it looks like any other old pub. But step inside and you’ll discover a whole world of fun in one building.
It’s the first place I head to on a Sunday when I need a proper roast dinner. By proper I mean like my mum makes, not something avant-garde meticulously placed in a pretty pile. No, I mean where it’s cooked with love and the portions are bigger than your head. It’s two courses for £10, too – please, please try the homemade apple pie!
The Kings Arms is so much more than a grub pub, though. In 2011, Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton took over the lease, with the intention of increasing the venue’s artistic endeavours. Since then, and now with a new owner, it is a pub, theatre and live music venue upstairs. See local bands, fringe festivals, up-and-coming comedians, poetry recitals, and everything in between. Check the website before you go, which has a comprehensive calendar of events, or just turn up and be surprised. Either way, you won’t be disappointed!
