The streets of Montreal always hold surprises, be it the countless murals covering entire buildings, tiny cafes, secret courtyards and more. My favourite unique street installation is both practical and fun. On a small street just off of Sherbrooke East is the Park Simonne-Monet-Chartrand. What sets this little green space apart from any other in the city is its direct access to the lower part of the street via a staircase, or much more interestingly, a slide! Where else in the city can you choose to slide down to reach another section of a street?
I first discovered the slide while I was on a jog in the area. Immediately a childlike excitement incited me to run up the stairs and slide down, an activity I loved when I would visit parks as a child but don’t seek out anymore. The facility with which a simple action like sliding down a slide can brighten my day and put me in a better mood, makes it a great reminder to pause, and just enjoy.
