Krasnyi Oktiabr (Red October) is a former chocolate factory. The iconic red brick buildings are now home to clubs, restaurants, bars, and galleries including the Lumiere Brothers Centre of Photography. I often come for something specific, but most of the times I find myself wandering or bicycling around.
The former factory is situated on the small island and offers some of the most beautiful views. If I’m in the mood for a cocktail, I go to Strelka bar and take a seat on the rooftop (bonus points if I manage to catch the sunset time).
Another great option while at the island is taking advantage of its past. While the chocolate production moved out, there still remains a nice shop selling Red October candy at a very reasonable price. After you’ve stocked up on chocolate, you can get some bread for the ducks that are flocking around.
There is a number of popular night clubs located at Red October. If you manage to visit the place during the day and then at night, you might be surprised to see how the island that was relatively calm gets bustling, swarming and roaring after dusk. Even at 6 a.m., there can still be music blasting. That’s the place that never sleeps.
