Everybody who has lived in Munich for a while and attends live concerts knows the Backstage. This club hosts all kinds of music, by concept, from metal to Cat Power. Founded in 1991, it moved a few times but has now stayed where it is- although the surroundings have changed drastically. It is a wild container and plants mixture, a labyrinth of different areas, all covered in green and with a straightforward alternative ambience. Once hidden on the dull land beside the many railway tracks entering and leaving Munich Central Station, this didn’t used to be an issue.
But in the last years it has been circled – if not strangled – by sharp monotonous highrise office buildings with strictly vertical sharp window slots, offering the ubiquitous lawyers associations the anthills they demand. So now the situation is very much: “All Gaul is under Roman control, except for one small village”.
Since the Viehhof area was lost to the usual city construction in 2018, the Backstage is one of the last of its kind. You run into music fans from all over the world but never the usual tourist. 0% tourists guaranteed.
