There are some features that both a good bookshop and a good record store in my opinion have in common: they are tiny, cramped up to the ceiling with stories and emotions and you can find people there who love what they are doing.
BEST Records in Maxvorstadt is one of those record stores that not only sell vinyls but also share the love for good music. On Saturdays you can find music enthusiasts of all ages in the small shop browsing through more than 20,000 records, talking about their latest finds, exchanging recommendations and listening to their next favorite record. Some of the customers have been going to BEST Records since it opened in 1990, some of them (like me!) discovered this feel good place for music lovers a bit more recently.
You can find a lot of soul, reggae and jazz in the store (I got both my Al Green Vinyls at BEST Records!) but there are also loads of records from other genres in the shelves and piles, whether it be metal, pop, rock, disco or funk. If you feel a bit lost in this mass of music, make sure to ask the owner (whose surname is Best and gives the shop its name) for help – what looks like chaos is actually an ingenious system that he knows like the back of his hand.
You see, BEST Records is not only a shop: it’s a home for vinyl lovers and music freaks.
