“First but not least“ would be the right claim for this bakery. They started out 30 years ago as one of the first wholemeal-bread-only bakeries and they also started with a very special oven. I used to live four houses away, was one of their first clients, and today I still am.

This is simply one of the best bakeries for wholemeal in Germany I would bet, if not in Europe, if not in the world. In the meanwhile they had to move their oven and production out of Munich and they sell their bread in over 60 Bio-shops and Bio-markets all over Bavaria. So this has become quite a success story. The very first shop is still here in Haidhausen, the quarter where the Bio movement of Munich started out.

Give it a chance and go there, or buy Fritz bread somewhere else. My suggestion is that you start with the “Sportlerbrot”, the bread for sportive people. For me, this has a second meaning, because Fritz, the owner, from the very first day of his Bio career, used to go playing tennis, which was so drastically against the expectations of the over-serious early Bio guys, that some of them even refused to buy his bread – at least in the first few months.
