Whoever knows Munich’s creative and social projects knows Import Export. It was founded in 2010 as a space for unlimited exchange and communication beyond social and cultural borders. I had heard a lot about Import Export, but I’d never actually visited until summer 2018 – and I’ve been there countless times since.
Import Export describes itself as a “cultural and multifunctional canteen”. Yes, it is a canteen indeed and it’s my latest go-to place for a laid-back lunch. You get a simple but delicious meal that is inspired by African or Arabian cuisine, homemade lemonade and cakes. The dish changes on a daily basis, and for the lunch offer you always pay what you can afford, between 6.50€ and 9€. And even though you can’t choose your meal, I can assure you, it will be delicious. I have liked every single meal I tried so far!
But after dinner is when the “multifunctional” becomes more obvious: almost every evening there are concerts, talks and discussions, meetings, performances or parties taking place and a lot of these events are for free. (Check their website or Facebook page for dates and events.) The interior is not shiny and perfect — it’s authentic, mixed and matched and – to be honest – a bit run down. But it’s not about the interior at Import Export; it is about meeting different kinds of people, mixing up with artists, free-minded spirits, creative souls, travellers and explorers. Like-minded people.
