The Endless Staircase – Infinite modern art

Close to the Sweet Brown Snail there is another piece of modern art that fascinates me: the endless staircase. It is set in the middle of a building complex at Schwanthalerhöhe in the Western part of Munich. What I love about art like that: you can just walk there anytime and let the piece of art work its magic – and it is for free.

The sculpture that is called “Umschreibung” in German (“circumscription” in English if literally translated) was made by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson. The fascinating thing about it is that it is basically an optical illusion set in real life. I would love to walk on it and see how long I could keep on strolling up and down the stairs losing track of time, but (un)fortunately visitors are not allowed to set foot in it.

So I suggest you just look at the swirled shape that connects to itself and see whether it makes you feel dizzy or you just start thinking about the beginning and the ending and the infinity of everything.
