In the western part of Munich, right next to Bavariapark and close to the subway station Schwanthalerhöhe, you can find an unusual piece of art: The Sweet Brown Snail.
Right in front of the Museum of Transportation, it stands as a symbol for the longing for mobility but is also a ironic contrast to the dream of speed. Whenever I meet friends in that area we usually “meet at the snail” and of course we know what we mean by that. But every time someone wants to join us who is new to Munich or not living here we get confused looks. But once they have seen it, everything makes total sense: The snail is more than 4 metres high and cannot be overlooked!
Teenagers even sometimes use it as a lookout and climb up the snail to hang out up there. I prefer to sit in the beer garden right next to the snail and enjoy a beer and some Bavarian food with friends.
