Why am I writing about this place?! I don’t want anyone to know about it! Usually when a place gains popularity, the food and service start to lack. However, I don’t think Charlie’s will ever be THAT place. It’s charming without trying too hard and has the right touch of southern hospitality without being overly friendly. Everyone is incredibly nice from the managers to the chefs. Inside the walls are adorned with framed portraits of Charlie Parker, Charlie Chaplin, Charlie Sheen…you see a theme here?
Charlie’s isn’t located in a “trendy” neighborhood. It’s in the south Bronx and borders Harlem, which is great because everyone dining is either a local or a local taking someone for the first time. I could stay there for hours just chatting away with the waiters and bartenders. And the staff can give great recommendations on what to order.
The food is so much more flavorful than any other brunch I’ve had in the city. Brunch in NYC is a weekend staple, but I’ve noticed lately that restaurants go for ambiance and bottomless drinks with cheap alcohol rather than paying more attention to the menu. Charlie’s is the first place where I raved about the food so much, I forgot I ordered drinks.
The menu changes per season for dinner. For brunch, you can never go wrong with the chicken and waffles or the shrimp & grits. Check their website as they have themed nights throughout the week including Hip Hop Brunch and Trivia Night.
