Sometimes I just want a good sandwich. Not a fancy sandwich. But a classic NYC-style version like a BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato for the uninitiated), pastrami on rye, reuben, or corned beef with extra mustard. Or maybe even a tuna melt. You can get all of these at the beloved Katz’s on the Lower East Side, but there’s something about Eisenberg’s local feel that keeps drawing me back.
They have a few tables, but this is usually a solo or duo kind of outing for me, thanks to a long counter that is one of the best in the city. Grab a stool and place your order. Just don’t be on your smartphone the whole time. You can watch them cook your order, interact with your fellow diners, or just check out all of the celebrity photos on the wall. Even though they recently changed ownership, the place still feels the same thank goodness.
Whatever you order, just make sure to wash down your food with a chocolate egg cream. I could tell you what’s in it, but that might ruin the fun. Just order one and start sipping. It’s actually quite refreshing and not as rich or sweet as you would think.
