If your business has been open for over 120 years in New York City, you’ve been doing something right. For ten of those years, I’ve been a loyal regular grabbing beers with friends or just taking a seat at the bar for a drink and some conversation. I love that there’s nothing flashy here. In an age of hipster concepts and bespoke cocktails, sometimes I just need a whiskey straight up.

When I want to escape the happy hour crowds or late-night revelers, I head up the steep staircase and grab a booth on the second floor. You need to order food to sit up there, but with delicious burgers, crispy fries, and tasty creations like a grilled cheese on pumpernickel with mushrooms (“The Governor”), you won’t have a problem with that. Plus, it’s downright peaceful compared to the scene downstairs.

Come during the holidays to see the giant Christmas tree. And guys, don’t leave without visiting the restroom on the ground floor. Trust me, you’ll be very impressed.
