Since it opened more than 60 years ago, Peter Pan Donuts & Pastry Shop has become one of New York’s favorite bakeries and a local institution in the Greenpoint district.
The shop closes at 20:00 daily, but running Peter Pan is a 24-hour operation. Baking begins around 02:00 daily to ensure the spot’s famously fresh donuts are ready for purchase when it opens before the crack of dawn, at 04:00 daily. There are no crazy flavors here, just classic donuts done right: chocolate cake, chocolate frosted, and cream-filled cinnamon buns, to name a few.
There’s a rush every morning, but most locals order take away on their way to work, so take a seat at the counter and stay awhile. As nice as it would be to eat donuts every morning, I go for the hot coffee, buttered New York bagels, and fresh orange juice. It’s everything you need for a simple (and cheap) Brooklyn breakfast.
