It’s hard to describe the balance some restaurants and bars achieve that catapults them to the top of my list of favorite NYC places. They’re not hip, they’re not fancy, they just are who they are.
For me, there’s no better spot that fits this ethos than Spain Restaurant. Located mid-block on a beautiful residential section of 13th Street, Spain’s old-school, no fuss charm hits all the right notes. True to its over-40 year NYC cred, its alternately gruff yet friendly service makes me feel right at home in my city. This article from the NY Times sums it up perfectly.
Take a seat at the bar or at one of the small tables just inside the door. Order an Estrella or a Rioja, and then watch the free tapas start flowing. Sherry Meatballs, Patatas Bravas, Tortilla, Garlic Chicken. None of it will blow away your taste buds, but hey, you can’t beat the price. So dig in, try to make the bartender smile, and enjoy this gem before it becomes a relic of the old NYC.
