You can’t visit New York and not see a show; Broadway theater is synonymous with Times Square! Yes, tickets can be very expensive for the more extravagant shows such as The Lion King, Wicked and Les Miserables. But I’m going to let you on a little secret so you don’t have to pay for full priced tickets.
TKTS! The discount theater vendor is a non-profit organization run by the Theater Development Fund, created to provide culture and the arts in New York City for affordable prices. Theaters use TKTS to sell through tickets at the last minute where discounts can run anywhere between 20% – 60% off (possibly more for off-broadway shows). It’s a win-win situation for all!
The main location is hidden in plain sight. The booth sits directly under the red stairs in the middle of times square. The trick is to get in line as early as possible on the day you plan on going to a show. The booth usually opens around 10:00, but I would recommend going at least an hour earlier as the line can get long especially for popular shows. If you’re not picky about which show to watch, hop on the TKTS line at least an hour before shows are scheduled to start. TKTS staff are great about helping you select the best seat for your money.
