THIS IS IT is an art installation piece from 2012 by Gardar Eide Einarsson, placed on top of Kunsthøgskolen (the Oslo National Academy of Arts). It is based on the stage decorations of Michael Jackson’s final tour, which was never completed, and looks like something out of an advertisement.
This is close to my place so I pass it all the time, and every time I see it, I say the words aloud in my mind. “This is it!” “Is this it?” It leaves room for contemplation and for appreciating the moment, and the viewer is left to find their own meaning in this piece of art.
The school is located in Seilduksgata in Grünerløkka. It is a beautiful building which used to house Christiania Seildugsfabrik from 1856 to 1960. The factory was one of the largest in Oslo and produced sails for sail boats and fishing equipment. Around 900 people (mostly women) worked here under terrible conditions.
The combination of art, architecture and history makes it a worthwhile stop while walking along the Akerselva river or wandering the streets of Grünerløkka.
