Spruce Food Market has one of the best intact mid-century neon signs in Center City Philadelphia. Looking much the same as it did back in the 1950s, this market is still an integral piece of the Rittenhouse neighborhood. And it looks so good!
I love walking by in the evening when the sun is setting at the far end of Spruce Street and the neon starts to pop. There are always fresh flowers out front under the classic red and white striped awning, and sometimes a colorful display of fruits and veggies on the other side.
Spruce Food Market carries the standard small grocer stuff like canned goods, snacks, and candy. But what makes a visit inside worthwhile is their large selection of craft beers. Whereas locals complain that the shop is a bit pricey for groceries, we can all agree that the market has one of the better beer coolers in Center City.
