The residence of Nikola I Petrović Njegoš was built in 1891. The castle is located in the middle of the city park Kruševac (Petrović Park) on the bank of the river Morača.
The castle of Nikola I in Podgorica used to be the official winter residence of the last king of Montenegro, and now it is the most prestigious art gallery in the country’s capital.
The Palace of King Nikola, the Perjanic Home, the Palace Chapel and the surrounding buildings were redecorated in the Art Gallery in 1984. Since 1985, it has been a part of the Center for Contemporary Art and has about 1500 pieces of art. The central facility of the whole complex is the Petrović Castle, now enjoying the status of cultural monument.
Representing works of the most eminent domestic and international artists, this place is a true jewel. If you are a fan of contemporary art, this is for sure a spot not to miss.
