“Escola Superior de Música, Artes do Espectáculo” is a Music and Show Arts School in the center of Porto. It is considered one of the most important academies for arts in town, along with its “Helena Sá e Costa” theater.
Since its creation in 1985, many great musicians, who come from all over Portugal (and even from other countries), have had the opportunity to improve their arts and skills with the great masters. But this information would not be so important for the general public such as myself… The very crucial thing, which is this article’s main focus, is their weekly jam session!
During the study period (October to June), every Tuesday, invited musicians and bands, school teachers and students gather to perform their art for the public. Jazz is usually the chosen music style, which then varies through some classics, blues, contemporary flows or just improvisation. The students get the opportunity to play with their colleagues and teachers in a more relaxed environment, while starting to receive the motivational cheers from the audience.
These jam sessions take place in a beautiful Concert-Bar, with cheap drinks (we are talking about an academic event here) and great atmosphere. The entrance is free, except when there is a band with an opening concert, when the ticket price is around € 2/person.
So if you don’t have any plans for Tuesday night, and want to have a drink with live jazz, now you know where to go!
