Like so many cities, Porto has its own movie festival as well. It takes place at the beautiful Rivoli Theater, and in 2019 it’s completing its 39th edition.
Every year, movies from every corner of the world compete for awards in many different categories. I can say that this festival is quite different from what you have seen. Don’t expect the scene of Cannes or Venice movie festivals. Here the movie selection is all about the “fantastic”, with the craziest and most unusual pieces of art presented by world-famous but also “fresh” directors, side by side.
During one week you can attend these “fantastic” sessions, while on the last weekend you can see the projections of the awards’ winners. Thriller, Horror, Drama, Sci-Fi and Adventure are the words of order, where movies such as “Braindead”, “Hostel”, “El Laberinto del Fauno”, “Amores Perros” or “Nothing” took the awards in previous editions.
Together with the main projections, there is also a competition for best shorts. This adds another dimension to the story, to the delights of the loyal public, who are always interested in watching a different recipe of movies, which otherwise would have never arrived to our eyes and ears.
Along with the movie festival, there are some events and parties related to it (such as the “vampire’s prom”), which places vary but that you can know more about on the theater.
