Ķīpsala is an island in Riga just over the Vanšu bridge on the right hand. The place has a variety of good for society institutions like an exhibition hall, shopping mall, restaurant, swimming pool and more. Although I like to use this island for other reasons.
Ķīpsala is a unique place for a slow walk. I usually start from the street named Balasta dambis. It runs right along the coast of Daugava and supplies great views of Old Town, Vanšu bridge, Riga Port and other objects over the river.
The architecture here must be highlighted without a doubt. The old wooden houses are set well together with newly finished buildings. So don’t give your full attention only to stunning views of Riga but also take a peak in the side streets. For me one of the greatest surprises here was the building of the embassy of Portugal on Balasta Dambis 60 with an entrance at Ogļu street. Just one more hint about it: check out the roof!
Well hidden here lies one of the most beautiful museums in Riga – Žaņa Lipkes memoriāls. Give it a try if you happen to be near by.
Ķīpsala is enjoyable throughout the entire year. Just dress accordingly to the weather and it won’t let you down.
