Latvijas Nacionālā bibliotēka – Castle of Light

In 2014, the National Library of Latvia moved to a new building known as Gaismas pils or the Castle of Light. I feel like most people either love the new building or hate it, and I’m definitely among those who love it.

When I first visited it, I was amazed by how beautiful it is inside. There is a lot of light wood, glass and metal used in the interior that creates a light and modern feeling that I really like. It is also a great place to get things done because it has this quiet, diligent atmosphere that just calls for productivity. Each workspace is equipped with everything you might need for checking things off your to-do list: a big desk, a comfortable chair, a lamp and several electrical outlets, not to mention the free Wi-Fi. Combine that with a large window that overlooks the river and the city and you’re ready for work!

The Castle of Light was also the main venue for the Latvian presidency of the Council of the EU from 1 January 2015 to 30 June 2015.

If you want to visit, go to the registration desk and ask for a visitor’s band. Just don’t forget your passport or ID!
