Officially there are no natural islands in Latvia at all, but in fact there is a couple of them. One of them is located in Riga’s city boundaries, among the two major rivers Daugava and Lielupe, the Baltic sea and the small Buļļupe river. All of these water entities are navigable.
You can use a kayak, a water jet scooter or even a middle-sized yacht to go around and enjoy the nature around the island. Some of the places are easily reachable by public transport and can be used for picnic, barbeque or simply a nice walk along the coast. Keep in mind that most of the island’s territory is officially a natural park and it is not allowed to place a tent here.
I often come here with my family to see the perfect sunset over the Baltic sea. Once upon a time, we saw here a sea seal lying on a sandy beach. This was a quite unique experience.
