Tērbatas iela (Tērbatas street) is one of Riga’s central streets and it is planned to close for vehicles (except delivery and emergency) for 1 month between July 16 and August 16, 2020.
Streets closing for transport is not a very common practice in Riga, and this concept was first tested very recently: on January 4 2020, Tērbatas street was closed for vehicles for one day and various cultural, entertainment and other outdoor activities were held directly on the street. People were just walking and enjoying the newfound freedom as the main users of the street. The same was also done with other central streets in Riga – in February, Blaumaņa street was closed for one day. and in March, it was Ģertrūdes street. The aim of this action was to promote mobility and support the development of the center of Riga.
From Friday, July 17, 2020, the citizens of Riga and guests are welcome to enjoy Tērbatas street from a brand new perspective – without noise and emissions from vehicles and with various entertainment, education and cultural activities. People will be able to enjoy the outdoors terraces of various bars and cafes. Everybody is welcome to experience this unique month and explore Riga and Tērbatas street from another perspective.
