Located on a very lively street in Riga’s Old Town, XL Pelmeņi has saved billions of empty bellies. I adore the place for its ability to be – as it has been, for many, many years, for its quality and price, performance etc.
You may ask yourself what is this XL Pelmeņi he is glorifying!? Oh, I won’t let you wait any longer.
XL Pelmeņi is a dumpling bistro. A spot where all kinds of people can be seen and met, starting from scruffy unemployed ones to some chic office clerks. A spot that is always crowded. A spot where you can see inspirations from Friedensreich Hundertwasser, at least in my humble opinion.
On the menu you will find many kinds of dumplings filled with meats and cheese, some salads and a traditional hangover soup – Soļanka.
The routine here is simple – just grab your bowl, load it up with all you desire, weigh it, pay for it, sit down and start to enjoy a typical soviet worker lunch. Afterwards, wash it down with 100ml of pure vodka like a real, albeit a slightly stereotypical, local from the ’70s.
