If you go a little bit to the West from the city center of Rijeka you will find a market called Brajda. I always loved Brajda, not just because it was near the flat I used to live in for five years, but also because it’s small and cozy and has a beautiful old building called the Brajda pavilion. This pavilion isn’t doing very well; people often choose boring supermarkets instead of places like this, but you don’t have to be those people.
In Brajda you can find everything you need for making a great domestic meal; from onions, the foundation of almost every cooked dish in Croatia, to cabbage, potatoes, all sorts of fruits and vegetables, eggs, meat, fish… you name it. If you’re hungry, you can go to one of bakery shops and buy yourself a burek or croissant. After that, you can stop by the sports betting place to see how fake electronic horses are doing, or the people betting on them.
If you come to Brajda market on Sunday, from 7AM to 2PM, you will find a great flea market with lots of colorful objects you can spend a few kunas on, or just the colorful people selling those objects to you. Don’t be surprised if you buy something you just recently threw away; one man’s trash is another’s treasure, even if the other is you again. Maybe you just needed someone to remind you of the valuables you got rid off.
