E.U.R. Rome – Rome's wannabe business city

""E.U.R." in Rome is a fascist/modernist neighborhood you should definitely visit if you're into architecture and urban planning or an avid photographer."

If you are into architecture and urban planning, or just even an avid photographer, you should take a walk through E.U.R., a southern neighbourhood of Rome built in a highly rationalist, monumental style, in step with Classical Rome but looking into modernity.

The area of E.U.R. (which stands for Esposizione Universale Roma) originated from the Fascist project to celebrate the success of the regime with a universal exhibition in Rome in 1942, which never took place as Italy entered WW2 in 1940.

The regime wanted to create an ‘ideal city’, which was modern and celebratory, but the construction was interrupted by the war. The area was reborn during the 1950s as an epicentre of modern urban development, a business and residential area characterized by green areas, elegant villas and even an artificial lake. In the spirit of looking forward, which has always characterized E.U.R., the area is still under construction, constantly reshaping itself through the vision of the most modern architects in Italy.

I love to wander around this neighbourhood and take pictures of its rationalist buildings and wide roads.
