The first part of the Hoogstraat (between Oostplein and Mariniersweg) is a great place for foodies. I always recommend this street when people visit Rotterdam because of great places like Kua tacobar, Verward, Kipgallery, but also Old Scuola, Heroine and Alfredo’s Taqueria (in Het Industriegebouw, just around the corner). But it has all got even better thanks to the newest addition: COCO.
COCO mixes up all that’s good from the Antilles, Suriname, Cabo Verde and Asia. These cuisines are well represented in Rotterdam, but you don’t often find a place where all these cuisines are ‘fusioned’. Also, even though regular Surinamese and Chinese restaurants serve great food, often the interior and ambiance aren’t very inviting. I usually eat my food and quickly head for a better place to spend the rest of the evening. COCO, however, is different. The interior is great and colorful (love the flowers), the lights are dimmed, besides delicious food they also serve wine and cocktails, so there you go — all you need for a long (romantic) evening of wining and dining.
I’m sure you’ll have a hard time deciding what to order, luckily I’m here to help. Don’t miss out on: creamy peanut soup (with or without chicken), award-winning vegan pom (what is pom?), salad with octopus and artichoke, spare ribs, and cod fish and salted meat croquettes. And don’t worry, if it is too much you can take a doggy bag home!
