Downtown Rotterdam has several independent bookshops which we think are really worth checking out like De kleine Kapitein (children’s books), Snoek, Van Gennep (art, poetry, photography) and come-back kid De Slegte for ‘ramsj’ and secondhand books.
And there’s Donner at the Coolsingel! A book heaven.
In the past Donner merged with other branches under the name Selexyz Polare but went bankrupt in 2013. Some dedicated employees joined forces and thanks to a successful crowd-funding campaign managed to save the shop.
Not only is the original name back but also the bookstore relocated to the former ABN Amro bank building at Coolsingel. A post-war monument which stood empty for many years and now hosts Donner. It was a well-made decision, as the shop will stay here, even when the bank returns to the higher floors in the near future when it becomes part of the Forum project.
They offer a wide range of specialized books, magazines and a side program with signing sessions. Go browse and buy new and second hand books, agendas, calendars, postcards, magazines, music or meet for coffee/lunch at the café. There’s also a department for antique books, van der Heijde sheet music and a piano inviting everyone who can play a tune or two.
The café and other sections are moved to some floors up due to (re)construction work so never mind all the hassle.
The new and improved space of 3.700m2 should be ready end of this year making it the largest bookshop in NL.
