Sculpture International Rotterdam takes care of our international art collection in the public space here in Rotterdam.
Look for it when you arrive at Central Station. Walk in the direction of the centre, cross the West Kruiskade towards the Westersingel. In this canal you’ll find some sculptures partly on a nice promenade. The sculptures are from famous international artists such as Moore, Rodin and Sapiro amongst many others.
Paul McCarthy’s ‘Santa Claus’ aka ‘Gnome Buttplug’, just look at the Christmas tree and you’ll get it;) provoked the people when it arrived in Rotterdam. For several years the sculpture was located in the Boymans van Beuningen museum’s courtyard before it finally found it place at Eendrachtsplein.
When you pass the skatepark, go see the Guard sculpture by Hans Benthum, it always makes me think of a Transformer. Further down is Cascade by Joep van Lieshout, at the Coolsingel/Blaak in front of the Maritime museum.
If you decide to continue your way on the Westersingel towards West Zeedijk, there are many sculptures. Infront of the new wing of museum Boymans van Beuningen stands ‘Sylvette’ by Picasso & Nesjar.
Get yourself a free map of the International Art Collection at the tourist office. It will help you find your way through town by looking for all these amazing sculptures by famous international artists. It makes for a great stroll.
