As a music lover, I prefer visiting smaller, intimate concerts whenever possible and have we got the right places here for you! We are blessed that Rotterdam has a few venues now since we lost iconic Nighttown. Quite a lot of legendary gigs happened there, which are embedded in a lot of people’s memories and in the pop history of Rotterdam. Besides Annabel, BIRD, Rotown for small(er) concert options, there’s also GROUNDS.
Located in a nice old building at Delfshaven neighbourhood, it has its focus on world music due to a branch of the CODARTS and the SKVR (where you can do all sorts of (music) courses) in the same building. But any music genre passes by here, really: from concerts with world music to folk to flamenco to reggae to jazz to the monthly Full Moon evenings and EPM which is a Brazilian music school to learn the rich music of choro and samba.
I like the space, as it used to be an open courtyard which is now covered to host about 200 people max. during concerts/events. The café is open during the week and during concerts.
Grounds is also very welcoming to people with children, as it facilitates events for the younger music fans among us. Check out the monthly Easy Sunday event (live music/disco/workshops) and the Multi Jams where kids can learn to make music together.
Check their website for the latest info on gigs and more. See you there!
