Hotel New York is not ‘off the beaten track’, it might even be the most well known hotel and restaurant in Rotterdam. Still, it is is one of my favorite spots because of its history, location, and great lunch menu (more about that later). You can reach Hotel New York by subway, or on foot, however the most exciting way to get there is by watertaxi!
Hotel New York was built in 1901 and used to be the headquarters of the Holland America Line, here first-class passengers would get aboard the ship that would take them all the way to New York. In those days, the building was impressive, but in recent years loads of high rise architecture has popped up and you sometimes hardly even notice the iconic old hotel.
The history is nice (especially in a city like Rotterdam) but Hotel New York wouldn’t be one of my favorites if it weren’t for the food. The restaurant is open all day and most meals can be ordered throughout the day. They specialize in fish and seafood, as soon as you walk in you see the chefs preparing gigantic plates of fruits de mer, but I always go for the ‘chef’s lunch fish’, three slices of (toasted) bread with shrimp croquette, smoked salmon and tuna salad, it never disappoints me!
After lunch, go for a walk over the Erasmus bridge, or head the other way towards the Fenix Food Factory for some more food and drinks!
