Kate Urban Market & Café opened its doors in 2018 and is on Deliplein in Rotterdam’s Katendrecht. The little terrace catches the sun and the interior gives it a very relaxing vibe. It’s a great place to do a spot of work or meet up with friends with a barista-made coffee and one of their homemade goodies. The properly lemony poppy seed bar and the gooey cherry almond chocolate brownie are amongst my personal favourites and I have popped in to snag a sweetie to enjoy at home.
The reason to get dressed and head over to Kate’s on a Sunday for me is the shakshuka. The Kate shakshuka is heart-warming with a spicy tomato sauce, smoked yoghurt and nuts and seeds with perfect eggs. Served with sourdough bread, it is all you need to make you smile. The shakshuka Berlin with crème fraiche, spinach and bacon is a great twist of a favourite, daring to be different in the best of ways. The Kate breakfast is everything good; fresh bread, a croissant, fresh fruit, cheese and ham (or an alternative you have requested), some sweet spreads and a fresh orange juice completes your five a day.
The market has some surprising finds, with a great variety of natural peanut butter in multiple flavours. The flavoursome canned sardines and the bottled soups make dinner a breeze. There is a small wine section and also non-food options for last minute gifts, if only for yourself.
