There is this pedestrian area near the Binnenrotte square where the main library and the Markethall are located and it is called Maagd van Holland quarter. It’s a small area/square between the Pannekoekstreet and Botersloot and it’s packed with cafés, shops and restaurants.
Check out the statue of the lady with the hat which is to remind and celebrate the capture of the city Brielle by the opponents of the Spanish king Felipe II on April 1st 1572. One of the well known events which happened during the 80 year’s war or Dutch revolt.
One of these places you can find here is the NINE Bar which is one of my faves to get myself a nice cup of coffee and more.
The coffee bar used to be Urban Espresso Bar – there’s still one in the west part of town-, it changed owner and they added the 9, which refers to the “bar” for pressing an optimal espresso. Despite the change of hands, the interior hasn’t changed much which is small and cosy and the menu expanded a little bit more.
Besides serving great coffee and tea, check the menu and the wall for food info and the specials of the day if you feel peckish. Organic products are used as much as possible.
During the warmer seasons, it has a terrace in the front and back with two entrances as well. I like the back part with the hazelnut trees and shrubs. Both front and back are great for people watching.
