This theatre was originally built in 1917 as a cinema and quickly became a big part of the Rotterdam entertainment culture. After the Rotterdam bombing, it was one of two remaining cinemas in the city. Around 1947, they started housing plays due to the loss of the Rotterdamse Schouwburg, where plays were previously held. Due to the Luxor’s huge success as both a cinema and a theatre, it was rebuilt to be a full out amusement theatre. In the following years, they’ve hosted a cabaret marathon, had huge names like Edith Piaf, Toon Hermans, Mini & Maxi, Wim Sonneveld and Brigitte Kaandorp grace their stages. A Nieuwe (New) Luxor theater was built in 2001 and shares the repertoire with de Oude (Old) Luxor.
The Oude Luxor has got a small restaurant inside of the building and both locations have several delicious options less than a stone’s throw away. You can have a look underneath the tab “eten & drinken”
Nowadays, their program consists of mostly theatre, musical and cabaret but family shows and concerts are also often available. Group arrangements and student discounts are also available for certain events, so always make sure to check the website beforehand!
