Every now and then I run into a bewildered tourist who asks me where he/she can find a good Dutch restaurant. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing, period. Asking the way to a good Dutch restaurant is like asking the way to a good German comedy club. But there’s one place that does come close to being a “Dutch restaurant” – Poffertjes Seth.
Naming a place that specializes in tiny pancakes as a “restaurant” is a bit of a stretch, I know, but in the no man’s land of Dutch gastronomy it’s as good as it gets. And Seth’s place is truly Dutch in style, ambiance, crowd and price (meaning cheap). As I’ve mentioned, poffertjes are tiny pancakes, usually served with a chunck of butter and powdered sugar, and a variety of optional toppings (whipped cream and strawberries are a classic variety).
Don’t let the size of the poffertjes fool you – a standard size portion is quite filling! As an extra bonus, Poffertjes Seth is located at the busy Hoogstraat, making it ideal for crowd-watching while you eat, especially on market days. Recently expanded, there’s plenty of room at Poffertjes Seth for everyone!
