We have our own version of the New York “High Line” here. It’s not an abandoned railway and not as lush with greenery; rather, it’s a wooden air bridge or canal (as that’s what “singel” means) designed by ZUS, which connects the Schieblock building (center) over a train viaduct, connecting to the (former train) station Hofplein/Hofbogen (north part).
This air bridge/canal started as a plan submitted by one of the contestants in the 1st City Initiative competition organised by the municipality. De Luchtsingel was selected and chosen by the majority of voters. Besides having won quite a large sum of money to build it, people were able to buy and have their names engraved on the wooden panels.
After a long wait and having to tackle a major issue (how to build a safe crossing over the train viaduct part), the wooden air bridge is finished and actively used as a fly over crossing.
De Luchtsingel starts from the Schieblock building which houses several small companies and spots like club BAR, Biergarten. You can also find the Dakakkers on the rooftop, which is an awesome urban veggie and bee farm where you can have lunch with views over Weena/Coolsingel.
Walk up to the other entrances at either Pompenburg or at Katshoek to check out that part of the Luchtsingel. The green part, Luchtpark Hofbogen, is also finished and open to the public 7 days a week.
Go up, relax and enjoy the different points of views.
