I got a grand tour of the city one of the first times I visited Rotterdam. The tour ended at a giant bright red ship. I thought it was some kind of museum, but it turned out to be Vessel 11, a bar and restaurant on a boat. I couldn’t have been more surprised!
Vessel 11 used to serve as a light ship at the south coast of Wales. When it was going to be demolished, a Dutch entrepreneur brought the ship to Rotterdam and did some renovation work after which it served as a maritime cafe. The current owners made it into a British gastro pub only a couple of years ago.
The menu is full of British high quality pub food like for instance the well known fish and chips, beef Wellington, and BBQ beef rib. On Sunday, they serve a delicious Sunday Roast. Their breakfast is also definitely worth your while. Being Irish, I prefer an Ulster Fry, but the full English breakfast of Vessel 11 does come close.
On a cold winter day, Vessel 11 is the ideal place to sit inside, enjoy your comfort food on one of the couches, accompanied by the gigantic and fluffy Vessel 11-cat. On a summer’s day, you can sit on the deck of the ship, which has several levels, and enjoy the sun to the fullest.
Vessel 11 also serves as a stage for concerts and live music. All this happens in the large area downstairs – check the website for coming events!
