Zwaanshalskwartier – Boutique shopping

‘Het Oude Noorden’ (The Old North) is booming. Once not such a great place to be, a lot of effort has been put in to attract a more diverse variety of people, shops and restaurants to the area. An example of this is the Zwaanshals-quarter, a beautiful area with lovely picturesque low-rise buildings and a great variety of shops and restaurants. I love to stroll around here on a lazy Saturday afternoon, usually just window shopping, although I always see plenty of stuff I would love to buy, if only…

My favorite part of the street starts at Noordplein (where you will find the Harvest Market every Saturday). As you continue you will find clothes, shoes, books, art, records, liquor, jewelry, you name it. A good thing is that all the boutiques are independent, so no chains. Another thing I like is that even though a lot of shops are new and trendy, you will still find a good mix of the old and new, trendy and traditional, Dutch and foreign, which is a great representation of what Rotterdam is about.

Of course you should never forget to eat and drink. For this there is also plenty of choice in the area. Have a sweet breakfast at Lof der Zoetheid, a healthy lunch at Bertmans, or enjoy some great tapas and wine at tapas bar Destino after the shops have closed.
