You have definitely heard about St. Petersburg well-yards in the center. The courtyards behind the beautiful facades may sometimes scare the visitors and even suppress the human psyche! But still these are good places to hide from the sharp, piercing wind of the northern capital.
One of the most famous well-yards in St. Petersburg is the courtyard of Bak House at Kirochnaya Street. Unlike other well-yards, this one is decorated with ribbon balconies and a gallery that crosses its space, connecting parts of the building at the level of the second and fourth floors.
For me it’s an amazing place with rich history, despite the fact that today it doesn’t look so clean. Unfortunately, it has not been renovated in many years, but the well-yard still keeps its secrets. You can still notice the 3-meter-high doors, remnants of the tile and moldings, railings and grills — the style that was destroyed by the Revolution…
It’s pretty easy to get there. Just go under the arch from Kirochnaya Street through a forged gate. Here is a secret code to open the gate in case it’s closed (normally, it’s closed) 😉
